So, you’ve decided to eat healthy – and that includes your snacks. No more junky, processed snacks for you; you’re going to make your own! But there’s just one problem. You’re constantly on the go, and most homemade healthy snacks can’t withstand the hot tropical climate!

Fresh fruit, yogurt, anything that contains chocolate, even veggie sticks – all of them go downhill quickly under the unrelenting heat.

So what’s an aspiring healthy snacker to do? Make these snacks instead! They’re easy, packed with nutrition, and most importantly, they can survive the hot weather!

If you’ve been to a Japanese restaurant, you’ve probably seen these protein-packed soybeans whizzing past you on the sushi conveyor belt. Perhaps they didn’t look super appetizing. After all, they’re usually sold simply salted and steamed whole in their pods.

However, with minimal effort, you can transform these beans into a delicious, satisfying snack that is really convenient to eat on-the-go. All you have to do is look for de-shelled and frozen edamame sold in most grocery stores. With a little olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, and 30 minutes in the oven, you have a nutrient-rich, crispy and chewy snack with lots of flavour. Get the recipe here.

If the idea of edamame is a little too exotic for you, how about some good old-fashioned kacang putih? Chickpeas are wonderfully versatile! They can be steamed, roasted, or boiled and mashed into a creamy protein-rich hummus with minimal effort.

However, the form that will withstand the tropical heat the best would be the roasted chickpeas. This is because their lower water content will prevent them from spoiling as easily as the boiled or steamed versions. Granola is, of course, the perfect combination of whole grains, protein, fiber, and micronutrients. And, since it’s baked dry, it can generally withstand heat pretty well (of course, granolas containing anything melty like chocolate will struggle in the heat).
